Why Food SCraps Matter

An everyday material we all create, and rarely think about once it’s gone.

Food scraps are generated in every kitchen, workplace, event, and gathering. Peels, leftovers, coffee grounds, and plate scraps move through our communities every day, quietly discarded and quickly forgotten.

As food waste feels small and routine, it is often treated as unavoidable. Once thrown away, it is typically sent to landfill, where organic material breaks down without oxygen and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. While food scraps are constantly produced, systems to recover them responsibly are still limited or unevenly accessible.

When handled with intention, food scraps become a valuable resource. Through composting, organic material is returned to the soil, supporting plant growth, water retention, and long-term soil health. Composting closes a natural loop that mirrors how ecosystems function, turning what was once waste into nourishment.

At Scrapz, we support food scrap recovery through education, guidance, and coordination with trusted local composting partners. By helping people understand their options, connect to services that fit their needs, and build habits that last, we keep organic material out of landfill and moving through systems designed to return it to the earth.

This is where Scrapz steps in.

Food Scrapz Recovery Two Ways

Start Composting At Home

Pickup & Drop-Off Services

Pickup & Drop-Off Services

We support home composting through workshops, classes, and on-site consulting helping individuals, families, and communities build systems that work for their space and lifestyle.

Scrapz also offers curated compost starter kits that repurpose locally collected cardboard, one of the most abundant and overlooked waste streams, into a practical recycling solution. By pairing food scraps with reclaimed cardboard, we help keep composting, local, responsible, circular, and accessible.

Our at-home composting support includes:

  • Free compost e-guides through the image above.
  • Hands-on workshops and classes
  • Curated starter kits made with reclaimed local cardboard
  • One-on-one consultation for those who want help working through the real-world trials and tribulations of composting.

Composting isn't about always getting it right. It's about slowing down, paying attention, and reclaiming a simple practice that supports personal wellbeing, community resilience, and ecological balance.

We support collection services through a brokerage and referral model with our local partner, Tidewater Compost, who offer residential pickup, commercial, and drop-off options for those who want a simple, reliable way to compost without managing a system at home.

Tidewater Compost collects food scraps locally and processes them responsibly, keeping organic material out of landfills and returning nutrients back to the soil. Their services make composting accessible for households and communities where space, time, or logistics make at-home composting difficult.

Compost services through Tidewater Compost include:

  • Residential curbside compost pickup
  • Community and self-service compost drop-off locations
  • Finished compost distributions twice a year
  • A consistent option for long-term participation

Composting through pickup or drop-off is about creating dependable pathways for organic material to return to the soil. It supports personal responsibility, community wellbeing, and a more resilient local compost system—without requiring perfection at home.
